AND is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary design agency founded by Gail Anderson and Joe Newton. We love solving problems, and we love typography. We also love rainbows and unicorns, but not as much as typography. Go figure.
Meet the Makers
Gail Anderson is a designer, writer, and educator who actually has her own Paul Davis portrait—and loves to show it off since she’ll never look that good again.
From 2002 through 2010, Anderson served as Creative Director of Design at SpotCo, a New York City advertising agency that creates artwork for Broadway and institutional theater. From 1987 to early 2002, she worked at Rolling Stone magazine, serving as associate art director, deputy art director, and finally, as the magazine’s senior art director.
Anderson is the author of Outside the Box, for Princeton Architectural Press, as well as co-author of ten books on design, typography, and popular culture with Steven Heller. She has written for books, magazines, and blogs, and lectures around the world on all things design.
Anderson teaches at the School of Visual Arts, and serves as Design Subcommittee Chair on The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee for the USPS, and on the board for the Type Directors Club. She is the recipient of the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Medal from the AIGA, and her work has been recognized by design organizations including The Society of Publication Designers, TDC, AIGA, The Art Directors Club, Graphis, HOW, Print, and Communication Arts. Anderson is a reformed collector/hoarder who now just looks but no longer buys.
Artist and art director Joe Newton has worked both sides of the table. As an art director he has created countless covers and features, and assigned hundreds of illustrations and photos for Rolling Stone and Seattle’s The Stranger. At Veer Joe was responsible for the visual identity and content curation of the Fonts division. His duties also included overseeing marketing and sales support.
In the beginning of 2012 Gail Anderson and Joe Newton launched AND (Anderson Newton Design) a small agency dedicated to sophisticated yet playful design, with a focus on typography. Recent clients include Time, Fortune, The New York Times, and the School of Visual Arts.
As an illustrator, Joe has worked with publications such as the New York Times, Vibe and Nickelodeon magazine, and for clients like Sony Music and Publicis. For more than 8 years his illustrations have appeared weekly alongside the Savage Love column in The Stranger and many other publications. His artworks have been honored by American Illustration, Communications Arts, and Print magazine. His design work has been recognized by the Print Magazine, the Society of Publication Designers and the Society of Illustrators.
Joe is also an avid musician and DJ who has toured internationally.
